You're missing the political affiliations. In my
experience, most direct marketers are religious
Republicans. They're faith extends to the notion that
anything they do that makes money, short of violating
the law (and sometimes even pushing that limit) is
therefore (a) productive and beneficial, and more
importantly (b) blessed by God. Bush appointed some
long-time DMer to a high position in the commerce
department, IIRC.
